From My Perspective as a Wedding Photographer: Why Less Is More When It Comes to Group Photos

Having photographed countless weddings, I’ve seen firsthand how the traditional list of group shots can turn what should be the happiest day of your life into a bit of a logistical nightmare. And honestly? I believe a lot of couples could benefit from a different approach.. one that emphasises genuine moments over endless posed shots.

Here’s why I recommend focusing on just a few key images and letting the rest of the day flow naturally:

1. Those lengthy group shots are often the most tedious part of the day - for everyone involved.

Many guests have told me before they like my swift style of getting the group shots done quickly - a lot of people don't love the camera and do not enjoy the posed part of the wedding. As a photographer, I know how it feels when you’re spending ages posing in one spot, forcing a smile, waiting for guests to shuffle into position. It can be draining, and you can often tell in the photos . Tired faces, impatience, and that sense of everyone just wanting to get it over with. From my point of view, it’s not exactly what you want to remember about your day.

2. They rarely end up being your favourite photos.

The truth is, the most treasured images I deliver are those raw, heartfelt moments . It's the smiles, the tears, the genuine interactions. Photos with Uncle Bob might be nice as a memory, but they usually won’t be what you look at first when your gallery arrives. What’s more meaningful are the images that capture how your day actually felt, not how it looked on paper.

3. You only get your wedding day once — so you should spend it actually enjoying it.

I always tell my couples: don’t let a long list of group shots take over your special day. Focus on the moments that matter. Focus on the laughter, the hugs, the little glances. Enjoy every second and trust that I’ll capture enough thoughtful and authentic shots to tell your story.

What I recommend:

My advice? Aim for around five photos with your immediate family. Your partner, children, parents, and grandparents. Those are the shots that will mean the most. The rest of the day can be more relaxed, more organic. I promise, we can still get lovely photos of your wider family and friends, but they’ll be more natural, more real, and much less stressful.

You can call on us to take a photo at any time. A great tip is to grab those candid group shots while you're mingling and saying hello to everyone. These are the moments when the setting doesn’t need to be perfect, and you just want a natural, heartfelt photo with your loved ones. These relaxed, informal shots often end up being some of the most meaningful in your gallery, capturing the true spirit of your day without the stress of formal posing. So, whenever you’re catching up with guests, feel free to signal us to snap those genuine, beautiful moments - they’ll be treasured for years to come.

sSpark Joy When Choosing Your Group Shots

Think of your group shots in the same way Marie Kondo would approach decluttering: ask yourself, Does this photo bring me joy? When planning who to include, focus on the people who truly matter to you - your immediate family, your partner, your children, your grandparents. If a photo with Uncle Bob or that distant cousin doesn’t spark joy or hold real meaning for you, it’s okay to leave it out.

Aim to keep your list of group shots intentional and heartfelt. You don’t need every possible combination — just those that capture your love and your closest family. A smaller, meaningful set of photos will feel more relaxed and authentic, and your day will be more joyful for it. When your photos mainly include the people who truly matter, the entire experience becomes more personal and less stressful.

To my fellow photographers: Share this post, help your clients understand this approach, and we might just redefine what wedding photography really means - more memories, less pressure.

And to my couples: Remember, your wedding day isn’t about perfection or filling a gallery with hundreds of photos. It’s about celebrating love, joy, and the chaos that makes your story uniquely yours. Trust your photographer to capture those genuine moments, and enjoy your day to the fullest.

Here’s to fewer posed photos, more memories, and lots of genuine happiness.
